The RDI ® Program

When beginning the RDI® Program, each parent and child participates in an assessment process called the Relationship Development Assessment, the RDA. This is a crucial beginning point for the development of a customized treatment plan. Each parent's interaction with their child will be thoroughly analyzed in order to learn the nature of their guided participation relationship. I closely look at the child's strengths and obstacles to determine how the Autism is being manifested in him or her and then how the parent's personality and style fit into this equation. From this point, a plan is developed and taught to the parents to lessen and remediate the core deficits of Autism.
What are the most important things you want for your child in 5, 10, or 15 years?

When answering that question, most people say that they want the same for their child with ASD as any other parent wants for their child.....a satisfying life with geniune friendships, to get married, to have their own family, and to have a job where he or she enjoys their work.
The Relationship Development Intervention ® Program was created to remediate the core deficits of ASD and to increase dynamic intelligence so that each person has the best chance possible at a true quality of life.

Why is this quality of life so difficult to achieve?

Even the brightest children on the spectrum, including those with high IQ's, age appropriate language, and success in school still have some missing skills. These missing skills, or dynamic intelligence, are what ends up being the biggest obstacles to a quality of life.
When looking at outcome studies, they show that a large percentage of those with ASD end up living at home, have few to no friends, and have difficulty maintaining a job. This is the case even with those who were considered to have "high functioning" Autism.

What is dynamic intelligence?

Dynamic intelligence consists of the abilities we use to manage "real-life" environments that are ever changing. Typical "life" encounters are always unpredictable, problematic, never the same, happy, sad, confusing, etc. We may go to work one day to find the road closed, we may meet up with a friend that starts to cry unexpectedly, we may have a parent call to say they fell and need help, we may be given a responsibility at work that we don't know how to do, or we may be very sad because of problems with a close friend. All of these situations are what each one of us deals with on some level each day. We are able to handle them because we have dynamic intelligence. It helps us to manage uncertainty, be flexible, and "roll with the punches". It helps us to know what to really be upset about and what to try and let go. Managing dynamic systems allows us to competently engage with the word.

Imagine if you didn't have dynamic intellignece. What would this make you want to do?

Because those on the Autism Spectrum don't have the degree of dynamic intelligence needed to manage ever changing environments, they tend to seek out a static way of life. This means that they prefer to live in unchanging environments where they can predict most things. They may prefer toys, movies, or certain types of information that is never changes and always stays the same. On the other hand, they may avoid people because by nature, people are unpredictable and spontaneous. Many times, those with ASD are left with few motivations and interests in life.

Imagine if you could help your loved one increase their dynamic intelligence so that they could manage uncertainty, enjoy unpredictable relationships more than static interests, and even enjoy change!

There is hope for this through the use of the RDI ® Program. Please go to www.rdiconnect.com to learn even more about this program and then call to set up your informational meeting at 956-664-2800.
The RDI ® Program always begins with the Parent Readiness Program. This is where parents start their education about what Autism is, what it isn't, learning about dynamic intelligence, guided participation, and the other core deficits of ASD. It helps so much for parents to "get ready" to make some of the best changes in their family's life. Parents have their own sessions with me and complete interactive online e-learning courses during this time.
Before beginning the RDI ® Program, including the parent readiness program,  I offer an informational meeting to help parents have a beginning understanding of what RDI is all about. After this meeting, you can check out the informative dvd on the RDI ® Program to learn more before making any decisions. Please call me at 956-664-2800 to set up your information meeting appointment.
