The Handwriting
Tutor
Handwriting tutoring is a wonderful option to help children
who struggle with handwriting. The causes of messy or illegible handwriting are
numerous. It can be caused by fine motor deficits, visual motor deficits,
limited instructional time on how to make letters, and/or development of bad
habits including forming letters incorrectly.Whatever the original cause, there is hope for significant improvement.
As an occupational therapist, I am trained to assess fine-motor skills, visual-motor skills, and visual-perceptual skills which are all essential requirements for handwriting and culprits for handwriting problems. In addition to assessing these skills, I'm trained to remediate delays in these areas. Due to this education and training, an occupational therapist is a natural fit for a great handwriting tutor. I prefer to use the Handwriting without Tears program because it is developmentally based. This means that the requirements of the curriculum take into account the natural motoric and cognitive development of a child at any given age. This helps significantly in preventing handwriting problems and/or remediating them.
The Tutoring Plan

skills will also be evaluated as part of the handwriting tutoring program.

Occupational Therapy
Any person with ASD may have a variety or range of signs and symptoms. Some are unique to those on the spectrum, but some are not. Those signs and symptoms that are unique to those on the Autism Spectrum are addressed using the RDI
® Program and are considered the core deficits. There may be other problems that you or your loved one is facing including:
fine and gross motor delays
coordination deficits
hypersensitivities to sensory stimuli
hyperactivity
hypoactivity or lethargy
visual-motor or visual-perceptual problems
sensory integration disorders
handwriting problems
A good occupational therapy program can address the signs and symptoms mentioned above and is part of a well rounded treatment program. I use different treatment techniques for the improvement of these types of deficits. Please see the "About Me" page to learn more about the different treatment techniques I offer.
